2021 Athletics West State Track and Field Relay Championships
December 11th, 2021 - WA Athletics Stadium, Floreat
The 2021 Relay Championships took place on December 11th, at the WA Athletics Stadium. With 120 athletes competing in 43 events, (14x 4x100m Teams, 4x 4x200m Teams, 10x 4x400m Teams, 1x Medley Relay Team, and 14 Field Teams) it was a massive day of competition.
The day started off with the 4x400m Relays. Timed finals were the name of the game, with the Top 3 times across the two races receiving the medals. Our U12 Girls (Mia Shelley, Anna Asante-Nimako, Shanelle Tica and Tahraya Ward) ran a strong 4:37.72 to take 2nd in their Timed Final and eventually come away with 4th Place. The U12 Boys (Zaine Calcott, Jaison Jaschinsky, Liam Barnes and Keenan Munro) also ran 2nd in their Timed Final (4:36.16) and managed to secure the first medal of the day, finishing in 3rd Place, winning the BRONZE Medal. The U15 Boys (Jamie Deane, George Holmes, Hawaiki Tichborne and Kaeden McQuoid) ran a great time of 3:53.74 to also secure BRONZE for Team Ridgewood. Our U17 Boys ran a great race in the 4x400m to win the race but were sadly disqualified for a track infringement. Not to be discouraged the team would be back later in the day in the 4x100m.
The track then moved to the 4x200m races, again Timed Finals were the name of the game with 2 or 3 races contested to determine the medallists. Our U9 Girls (Amelia Barnes, Ivy Warburton, Dillan Martinovich and Kamika Pitout) finished strong to take 4th place in the first race, finishing 4th overall following a slower timed final 2. The U9 Boys (Ryder Elliss, Te ariki Tichborne, Jaxson Locke and Carter van der Westhuyzen) took inspiration from the girls and won their timed final. After all three timed finals were complete, the boys had secured the third BRONZE medal for Team Ridgewood!
Our Centre Captain Mia Conroy (U17 F) was not content with just running for the Red, White and Blue of Ridgewood LAC. Mia supported her Senior Club teammates from West Track Athletics Club in the Senior Distance Medley (1200, 800, 400, 1600) running the 800m to assist her team in securing a BRONZE Medal. Straight after finishing the Senior Distance Race, she jumped straight back onto the track to run another 200m as part of the U15-U17 Distance Medley Team (200, 200, 400, 800). Alongside Chloe Reeve (U16 F – 200m), Declan Morrison (U17 M – 400m) and Bailey Taig (U16 M – 800m), the team ran 4:00.94 to win BRONZE for Ridgewood LAC.
After the first track session, Team Ridgewood LAC had won 4 Bronze Medals.
Meanwhile, in the first session of Field Relay events, the U9, U10, U12 and U14 teams were battling it out for supremacy. The U14 Girls came 6th, the U9 Girls came 7th, and the U9 Boys and U12 Girls came 8th. Special mention to our U10 Boys (Hunter Etchells, Joshua Phillips and Angus Shelley) who fought hard to come 4th with 1066 points. Our U10 Girls (Savannah Holdsworth and Sienna Kehoe) [918 points], U12 Boys (Travarn Ackerman, Hoani-Jay Tichborne and Johannes Nicolass Viljoen) [1511 Points] and U14 Boys (Seaden Taig and Brayden Phillips) [1921 Points] all securing SILVER MEDALS with our U14 Boys just 14 points short of Gold.
A huge start to the day with 3 Silver Medals and 4 Bronze Medals all before Lunch.
The second track session kicked off at 2.30pm with the Open 4x100m races and some very quick times. Then it was time for the 4x100m Heats with 8 of our 12 teams qualifying for the Finals later in the day.
The finals kicked off at 4:22pm with the U14 Boys and U15 Boys races running as straight finals due to a low number of teams entering. Our U14 Boys ran 53.65 seconds for 5th, whilst our 4x400m Bronze Winning U15 Boys from earlier in the day took their 4x100m Final to a photo finish for third with the boys recording a time of 49.74 seconds to claim 4th place, with the team from Kingsway LAC finishing 3rd in 49.38 seconds.
Our U16/U17 Boys (Aron Koch, Charlie Williams, Zack Warburton and Declan Morrison) bounced back from the disappointment of the 4x400m disqualification to finish the 4x100m final in 46.49 seconds and claim BRONZE. The U9 Boys (Ryder Elliss, Te ariki Tichborne, Jaxson Locke and Carter van der Westhuyzen) were once again on fire on the track for the final of the 4x100m to run a blistering 1:02.02 and claim the first GOLD Medal for Ridgewood LAC for the Championships. The U12 Girls also ran a great 4x100m final to finish 4th in 56.12 seconds, with 3rd just 0.37 seconds ahead.
Not to be outdone on the track, the second group of field relays saw our U11 Girls, U13s, U15 Girls and U16/17’s contest their events. A slew of great individual and team results saw Ridgewood LAC bag another four medals from the second field session. Our U17 Girls (Ada Meakins and Tykeria Slater) [1856 Points] finished a respectable 7th. The U16/17 Boys (Tyson Phillips, Jesse West and Jake Woodman) [2106 Points] finished in 4th place just 199 points behind 3rd. Our U11 Girls (Amberley Musson, Alisha Moore and Eliah Mulimbi) [1348 Points] and our U13 Boys (Tirikatene Heteraka and Isaac Akwasi Asante-Nimako) [1520 Points] both finished 3rd to secure BRONZE medals each. Our U15 Girls (Hayley Mann, Olivia Williams and Jasmine Goodridge) [2398 Points] had some late event changes amongst the team but still secured the SILVER medal and 2nd place. Finally, Our U13 Girls (Sophie Williams and Peytton Wentholt) [2440 Points] finished another relay championships by going one place better on their 2020 result of silver to finish in the GOLD medal position in 2021!
Overall, Ridgewood LAC athletes brought home 2 Gold Medals (1 Track, 1 Field), 4 Silver Medals (All Field) and 8 Bronze Medals (5 Track, 2 Field and 1 Senior Event). 6 other teams finished 4th and EVERY FIELD TEAM finished in the Top 8 which is another amazing achievement.
Special Congratulations to Mia Conroy and Declan Morrison (U17’s and Centre Captains) who both were dual bronze medallists, along with the U9 Boys who were also dual medallists with Bronze in the 4x200m and Gold in the 4x100m.
A huge thank you to all the parents who volunteered as a Team Coach or assisted on a Field Site on the day. Special thanks to Kieran Reeve (Start Team), Rachel Williams (Field Referee) and Matthew Vine (Meeting Manager) for volunteering for the entire day of the championships. Without the support of all the officials and parents, events like this just don’t happen.
Once again CONGRATULATIONS to all of Team Ridgewood LAC.
