2022 North Zone Championships
The 2022 North Zone Championships took place on February 12th and 13th, at the Kingsway LAC competition arena. The North Zone Championships was the State Championship event for our U7 and U8 athletes with 20 athletes competing and 103 athletes across the U9 to U15 age groups competing for Qualification spots at the WA Little Athletics State Championships scheduled to take place in March.
Day 1 started with a hectic start for athletes and officials alike, trying to process multiple events through the call room area all at once caused a slight delay to the commencement of competition. However, once competition was underway, Ridgewood LAC athletes were shining throughout the arena across all disciplines. Some technical difficulties with the timing system caused further delays for Long Track athletes, but the amazing team of officials and volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the right athletes, had the right times, and the right athletes qualified for finals and/or the State Championships.
A huge thank you from the Senior Officiating team to the Ridgewood LAC parents who answered the call of the Competition Management to head to the Call Room and assist in the afternoon when volunteers were few and far between, as always Ridgewood LAC families clearly demonstrated what the LA Motto of Family, Fun and Fitness is focused on by coming out to assist.
Day 2 started much smoother with the Senior Officiating Team working through the technical and operational bugs overnight to prepare a much better day, starting in the Call Room. With a much smoother process established and maintained throughout the day, competition got underway on-time and ran well throughout the day. Field events and Straight Track events ran mostly to time throughout the day, with just some delays on the Circular Track appearing later in the day as some technical gremlins returned and some protests being dealt with throughout the afternoon.
Our U7 and U8 Athletes demonstrated their strength and determination securing two 1st places, five 2nd places and two 3rd places across the weekend. A huge congratulations to Billie Greatbanks (U7 F) cleaned up with a 1st Place win in both the Vortex and 200m, a 2nd place in the 300m and a 3rd place in the Discus events to come away with 4 ribbons from the weekend. Alice Foot (U8 F) secured two 2nd place finishes in the Discus and Shot Put events with Selena Kehoe (U8 F) taking a 2nd place finish in the Turbo Javelin event. Hayley Moore (U8 F) continues to power in the longer distance events with a 2nd place finish in the 500m, whilst Benaiah Tolley (U8 M) wrapped up the big finishes with a 3rd place finish in the 200m. There was plenty of athletes who made track finals and performed excellently across the field events too. A huge congratulations to all.
Our U9 to U15 athletes continue to amaze the Ridgewood LAC Board and Coaching Team with over 50 of the 103 athletes securing Automatic Qualification results by placing in the Top 4 in one or more of their events, elevating them to the State Championships event coming up later in March. Following the championships, another 40 plus athletes achieved next best performances and qualified for the State Championships in March.
The weekend was a huge success for Ridgewood LAC with some of our best results in recent championship history with our biggest team ever qualifying for the State Championships.
The Ridgewood LAC Board would like to thank all of the parents, volunteers and officials who contributed to the weekend. Without the dedication of all of these individuals, this event would not have been able to be conducted.
Again, the Competition Management extends sincere thanks to those Ridgewood LAC parents who completed additional rosters throughout the weekend, even those individuals who did not need to complete rosters due to other family members already completing the rosters or their athletes not even competing on the Zones Weekend.
A huge thanks to our Centre Captains and Senior Athletes who attended to support their junior compatriots and cheered every athlete on to the very end.
As is tradition, the captains concluded the weekend late on Sunday with the annual Zones Super Relay Race with the results being called as too-close-to-call. Team Conroy Vs Team Morrison was another classic event to close a massive weekend of competition.
To all the athletes who have qualified for the State Championships, Congratulations and Good Luck for your events in March. Once again CONGRATULATIONS to all of Team Ridgewood LAC.
